A friend and I decided to hitchhike 160 km (99.34 miles) from Hamilton (New Zealand) up to Cathedral Cove. At least that was the plan. This ended up being a wild turn of events... anyway we ended up not getting totally there, but found this really awesome tiny gold mining town called Waihi with tunnels and everything open to the public.
The lady we got a ride from had us help her move her chickens, move furniture around and then went to an 80/90's cover band party with her and her friends. This is a very typical New Zealand Friday night... chickens, busy work, and partying to classics of the 80's and 90's.
The next day some of my University of Auckland friends friends were driving down and picked us up from Waihi, and we continued on to Lake Taupo which is a giant volcanic lake. We climbed up a Mount Tauhara, which is a small mountain on Maori land and naturally... we drank a beer on top.
After we climbed down and went swimming in the Otumuheke Stream, a thermal river where the water was hot tub temp. We got some dinner and talked with a hippie dude and he told us about a choice *free* camping site out by the Waikato River. Sweet as!
When we woke up in the morning (apparently I had slept walked and talked in the middle of the night about bronze medals) there was a really thick fog that had settled, and the sun had just starting to shine, drool over this picture. If you want it in a full size, email me and I'll hook you up.
one word: stunning |
For real though, this is one of the best pictures that I've taken here in New Zealand. Every photo that I've loaded is not photoshopped, or altered in anyway. This is real life.
The next day (Sunday) we went to Raglan and I went surfing. I didn't get any pictures of this, but I did stand up on my second try! The waves and current were really freaking intense and I did get dragged along the bottom a few times. One of my biggest fears, being totally helpless in the ocean. Terrifying.
This coming weekend the adventure is going to be driving to Egmont National Park and tramping Mt. Taranaki! Stay tuned! Subscribe please!
