Avalanche Peak is a spectacular tramp (hike) in Arthur's Pass. The entire hike up is essentially a rock scramble that winds along a river that has several waterfalls as you hike up, out and back takes about 6 to 8 hours. As you come out of the tree line you can see massive views for miles of the other mountains and peaks of Arthur's Pass. To actually get to the top of the peak requires a good bit of effort, but nothing that is too crazy.
When Alexandra and I got to the top we met this really cool fellow American who has been WWOF'ing (working for food and stay) and hitch hiking for the past 8 months. We decided to take this really dorky picture posing with the cliche Japanese school girl style.
The night before we met this guy from the Czech Republic who had an engineering job, but was working from a van he had bought and was driving around the country. I called this van the "Mobil Command Unit" because it had a stove, fridge, storage, twin bed, wireless internet, and electricity. This is such an awesome idea, I really want to come back to New Zealand and do this same thing! Anyway, we were talking with him and he was telling us that he had build a snowman up in a saddle at the peak of Avalanche Peak, when we got there the snowman had fallen down, but I rebuild it. When you go do Avalanche Peak I encourage you to build a snowman at the top and keep the tradition alive! Post in the comments if you've done this :-)
Blanchard...the pano of the mountains....truly beautiful...bring me home a piece!
