Went to a rugby match where the Waikato Chiefs played a home game. The resident director from AustraLearn and friend of mine, Gavin set the whole thing up, another reason to study abroad through AustraLearn. If you get the opportunity to go to a rugby game, go do this.
While walking to the game, we saw this fan wearing a Waikato Draught (local beer nicknamed 'river water') and Chiefs flag like it was a cape and some shiny frilly bike handle bar confetti in her hair, this basically sums up the average rugby fan. Drunk, rocking a cape and loving shiny things.
At the beginning before the game there was a haka that was performed, this is something that is really cool to see, and is only seen (unless it is an away game) here in New Zealand.
Rugby is not at all like any sport back in the states. I can best describe it as entertaining to watch as a hockey game, but with real athletes playing nonstop football minus the pads and all the big hits you can stand to watch. Intense. The Chiefs played the Otago Highlanders with the final score to be 20 - 7, boom goes the dynamite.
